The Council have recommended that Mr Sharpe should proceed without delay to Westport to-operate in carrying out the commission ; also that the Reserve above Rintoul street shall be divided into business sites; and further that resolutions of last year as to freeholders should apply to those having freeholds on native ground. The motion as to Municipality possessing reserves has been postponed till Monday. June 9. Mr Sharp cannot leave per Kennedy to act as commissioner. [Anglo-Australian Press Telegraph Agency] NELSON. June 6. The Goldfields Districts Bill has passed through Committee. The road between Westport and Charleston, via Addison's is to be completed as soon as possible. £6OO has been placed on supplementary estimates for road from punt across the Buller to head of Lagoon. A resolution was carried that the Commission sent to Westport should complete the settlement of all claims. The bill to amend the Education Act has been road the second time. June 9. Sir David Munro has resigned his seat in the House of Representatives. WELLINGTON. June 6. At the Appeal Court, Drury v, Roberts, a Wanganui appeal case was dismissed with costs. A public meeting is convened to take steps for tha reception of the new Governor. Extensive preparations are being made.
June 9. Sailed the Rangitoto. The contract between Hall and the Sydney Government, provides that vessels of 800 to 1000 tons, similar to the City of Adelaide shall be employed. Penalties—Failure to provide vessel at appointed time, £300; for every days delay, £100; for delays on voyage, £SO a day. The contractor is not to assign or sub-let any part of his contract, except branch services) without the consent of the Postmaster-General of Sydney. The sureties are W. Cameron and J. B. Dunn, tobacco manufacturers. The Government have agreed to advance a hundred thousand pounds to the Kanieri Lake Water Race Company, Westland; the other half of capital required to be raised by the public. The Government have also promised to introduce a bill for fifty thousand pounds loan to "Westland, to be secured on the land. The Colony paying interest and sinking fund for ten years. CAMBRIDGE. June 9. The surveyors start to-day to cut line along the confiscated boundary. Afterwards a road will be cut, and a cavalry patrol established from redoubt to redoubt. Native affairs are quiet. NAPIER. June 9. Locke reports that the Taupo natives condemn the recent murder. DUNEDIN. June 6. The Journeymen Bakers' Association have resolved that after the 16th June the wages shall be —for foremost hands, Css, for second hands, 55s per week ; hours, from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m; one hour over-time. The City Council has voted £IO,OOO for city improvements, and £2OOO for a carriage drive through the Town Belt. At the City nominations to-day, seventeen candidates were proposed. Six hundred people were present at the nomination. Macandrew claimed to be the originator of the Panama and San Eraneisco mail services. He would endeavor to secure main trunk lines of railway. Gillies (brother to the Superintendent of Auckland) said that he came forward in defence of constitutional rights. Macandrew's return is considered safe. The Government has received satisfactory tenders for the Awamoki Railway, at £SOO per mile. June 9. Austin the pedestrian is attempting to walk a thousand miles in a thousand hours. CHRISTCHURCH. June 9. A meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company is called for June 20, when it is to be proposed to increase the capital from £IOO,OOO to £200,000, to increase the number of directors, and authorise the formation of Boards of advice in London and Provinces of New Zealand. The Provincial Education Bill is passed. The Metropolitan race meeting is fixed for November 11th 12th and 14th.
