Tolegraph news was received last evening that the s.B. Murray could not enter tho Hokitika river yesterday. The Kennedy is at Greymouth. The s.s. Goahead loft Wanganui early 3 o tterday and may be expected off the Buller this afternoon. The arrival of the s.s. Murray, of tho Anchor Line of steamers, in the river at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday last attracted considerable attention, curiosity b'?iug aroused to see the improvements lately effected. As she steamed up the river she looked every inch a model coasting steamer, and closer inspection confirmed the favorable opinion. Everything alow and aloft is new and perfect of the kind, and the Murray is now as handsome, compact, and handy a boat for hor size as any steam craft iu New Zealand waters. Her cabin accommodation should make her a favorite with all travellers coming i r going on the Coast. The Murray left Nelson street wharf for the south at 2.30 a.m. on Sunday, and got as far south as the Steeples, but a veryrough sea prevailing Captain Whitwell deemed it prudent to return; and came back to the wharf and remained until this morning, when lie again left at 3 a.m. The Murray has a heavy freight for southern ports. On the night of the 11th alt., while Mr Garnett, fourth officer of the barque Eainbow, was descending the steps of Mr Vilcoq's wharf, at Russell, whore the vessol was lying, in order to get into the ship's boat, one of her foremast hands came up to him as he thought to speak, when the man plunged a knife at Mm. which providentially escaped his heart, but entered his left arm, causing a dreadful wound, and severing the principle arteries, which bled profusely. The offender was at once arrested.
