At the last meeting of the Otagd Institute, au extract from a letter from; Dr Lauder Lindsay were read, stating that a Df Ivan Berggron of the University of Lund, Sweden, where he holds the office of Decent of Botany and Assistant Curator of the University Herbai-ium, has proposed to de* vote a year to alpine exploration in New Zealand. His costs are to be borne by the University of Lund and the Academy of Science of Stockholm, but as in Scandinavia, a little' money goes a long way, and people there have no idea of the cost of colonial travel and living, Colonists are invited to aid tho learned Doctor in his exploration. Mr Vincent Pyke, Warden at Lava rence, is about to publish a story of Colonial Life and Adventures, which is said to be well written. Tho Provincial Council 'Of Canterbury has recommended the Superintendent to set 100,000 acres of waste land a.? an endowment for a School of Agricultural; and an equal number for tho promotion of superior educa--tion.
The ' Wauganui Chronicle' say's the natives between Opunako and Waroa have seized a lot of sheep belonging to a settler in the district, and having killed them, and skinned them, nailed their fleeces upon the trees. In additisn to this it is informed that the natives have seized Mr Bayly's working bullocks. .
The most streftuoila exertions are being made, says Wellington Independent, to complete the new Parliament buildings within the contract time. Every tradesman who can handle a saw or wield a paint brush has been put on the works, and the buildings are rapidly assuming the form of completion.
