It is with very great regret, and a sincere wish that it might bo disbelieved, that the public here give credence to the rumor that Captain of the Kennedy,' has lost his appointment. No officer in the service of the Anchor Line has been more respected than Captain Quance, or more deserving of such respect and confidence.
The arrivals yesterday were" the Kennedy from Nelson, with the English mail on board; the Aurora,from Christenerchj and the Cynthia from Wellington. The Aurora sailed in at half tide without difficulty, the Cynthia coming up three hours afterwards took the bar at dead low water about 2.30 p.m. Soon afLer crossing she seemed to take a sheer to tho eastward, from the current catching her on the bow. The signalman put the semaphore arm hard over, but tho vessel still kept sheering, owing to the full mainsail kept on her; had the peak been dropped she would have no doubt got off. The Harbormaster boarded her at once, and found that the accident had happened owing to the peak halliards having swelled with the wet, and the peak could not be got down in consequence. In a few minutes she was again got afloat, but the anchor not holding she got on the opposite -sido of the channel. An anchor and. chain was at once got out there, so that she might hold on till half flood.
