Raine, Sedgwick, Willams, Scott, Holt, Wright, Simpson, Alexander, Mackey, I Martin, Blake, Graham, Smith, 1 Maori, and I 12 original. TheOSgakawhan channel is now in good ' order; there being a straight run out, with twelve feet of water at high tide. The westerly wind lately prevailing ha 3 < completely silted up the southern channel, which for mouths past has been gradually • closing ; and at low water it is possible to walk dry shod from the South Spit unto the Island—as it is termed. The northern channel still remains in excellent condition with any amount of water on the bar. The harles Edward went out on Wednesday for Nelson at 11.30 a.m., low water. The' Auckland Weekly News says :—" In the course of three weeks or so it is expected that the repairs and alterations bcin" made to the Star of the South, to fit her for the Fiji, trade will be completed. The usual trial trip will then take place, and it is expected she will be able to' enter upon 4he Island trade about the Ist of June. Considerable alterations are being made to her machinery, and it is anticipated that her speed will be much increased in •cons'e- ■ quence, -while the consumption of coal will be reduced to the lowest -possible • quantity." An application has been made to the Government for a lease of the Snares as a sealing station. The applicant undertakes I to reside there himself, or place some one there, and not to hunt seals during tho breeding season, also to establish a provision depot for shipwrecked crews, and afford every facility for erecting a lighthouse if it should be determined to establish one there.
