ON CORSETS.
The News Letter, referring to a lecture on this subject given at the Christian Toung -Men's Association, says:—Let every man now present, young and old, married and single, make this resolution : Never to marry a girl that wears corsets! Tell her, "Stays off, or she stays on in single cussedness !" Make light of her taper waist. Then this wretched custom of aping the fashions, now happily confined'to 1 the ladies, will die out altogether. The speaker then occupied two minutes in settling Darwinism. He seized themonster by the scruff of the neck, as he does his refractory school-girls, and slew it with a ferocious text out of the Bible. It will never wiggle more. "While we caw Jemima home that balmy evening, our feeliug Were considerably " ris" about this corset business. Can it be, we wondered, that our own adorable Jemima wears them? Are we nestling a scorpion to our bosom, while she nestles a pair of corsets in her's ? "We determined to investigate. Stealthily winding our arm round her lissom waist we ventured a gentle pinch in the region of the left armpit. She gave a speech, grabbed a fistful of our hair and disappeared with it in a street car. We still mourn the faithless Jemima. Next day, full of the nice lecturer's f-ivice, we called on a few girls we are acquainted'with, to ascertain if they concealed these machines under their clothing. They did not press upon us •to- call again. Their big brothers assisted us down the front steps. The investigations of a truly scientific mind are not to be thus baffled. Perseverance was at last rewarded by the discovery of a young woman who submitted to our investigations in the cause of science. After a hurried examination of some fifteen minutes, we'said : '" Fair damsel, is it possible ! Can it be thatwhat we feel is a corset!" "Course it ain't" said she smiling, " them's my ribs'!"
