Harbor Master Captain Leech sounded the bar yesterday morning. The least water found in the channel at high water was fourteen foot. The tides are exceedingly poor, being some two feet below average springs. The Charles Edward ran aground on tho Hokitika bar on Friday last, but got off some hours afterwards. She has sin'ce remained at her moorings, the bar being too shallow to permit of her crossing. At high tide this morning an attempt will be made, and she may probably'reach here to-night. The Kennedy still remains bar-bound at the Grey. The Wallace is expected as a : short boat from Nelson, to arrive either to--morrow or Thursday. Thes.s. Goahead left Wahganui far Westport on Saturday evening lest, but at dark •last night had riot shown Up. Messrs Frazor and Ttezey, shipbuilders, of Auckland, have taken the contract for the repair and lengthening of the steamer St. -Kilda, which will on leaving their hands be nearly -a new vessel. She is to be lengthened twenty-four feet, and to receive a thorough overhaul and renovation from'stem to stern.
