The s.s, Wanganui, Captain Linklater, left Wanganui at 11.30 a.m. on the 14th, and arrived at Westport at 9 p.m. on the loth, experiencing a strong south-east gale with a heavy sea crossing the Straits. She brings a full freight of cattle and sheep consigned to Messrs Seaton and Davidson. We are indebted to Mr C. Keeble, agent, for Wanganui, Auckland, and Wellington files.
The schooner Wanderer, from Lyttelon, arrived at mid-day yesterday, sailing in at half tide. . She left Lyttelton on Saturday night last, and had favoring winds throughout. She brings a full cargo of produce consigned to Messrs Bailie and Humphrey,
A - new steamer, to be called the Manawatu, and to be used for trading on that river, is being built at Auckland for the N.Z.S. Company. Her length of keel is 120 feet; length, over-all, 130 feet; breadth 18 feet -, and depth of hold, 7 feet. She is being built on the composite principle, and is to be a paddle boat, fitted with very powerful machinery. She has a planking of 3£ inches, and her iron framework will be supplied by Hawkeswood's foundry. The Wanganui Chronicle states that the eteamer Murray is to be laid on between Wanganui and Westport in the cattle trade, and that Messrs N. Edwards and Co. have made an offer to purchase the St. Kilda. The same paper says:—" The affairs of the W.S.N. Co. will be wound up with all speed, and room made for a wore satisfactory organisation. A new Company with a capital of ,£15,000. judiciously laid out in two new steamers, specially fitted for the requirements ■of the port, would prove a safe and profitable object for merchants and traders here to invest the necessary capital in. We trust that such a Company, undismayed by the ill success of the expiring W.S.N. Co., will notbe long in being floated as the prosperity of the town and district are bound up in the maintenance of regular steam communication between Wanganui, Wellington, Manukau, and the West Coast ports."
