LOCAL POLITICS.

R( To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Is it not pitiful to see the insane attempts of those who seem to imagine that they are leader? of public opinion making such mighty efforts at notoriety with superficial matters, and if they venture below the surface, descending only to low personalities, apparently deceiving themselves with the belief that they are doing good service without really even touching upon the real grievances under which the residents of the G-oldfields labor. Is Mr Munro's famous letter for instance fairly entitled to a very high position in our estimation? After being a repetition in itself, it is merely a repetition of his famous address when seconding the vote of confidence to his Honor, proposed by Mr O'Conor, and the best part of his famous address is but a repetition of Mr O'Conor's remarks when proposing that vote of confidence. Tet " Honesty" would insinuate that it is an attack on the Superintendent's speech generally approved by the public. Surely Mr Munro, " Honesty" and all the rest of that ilk must place the public very low in the scale of intelligence, if they imagine the public cannot see through the transparent \ efforts to lead public opinion without the requisite abilities. Can all this sound and fury be a bid for municipal honors, or is it something like an offer for notoriety to be again used at the coming elections, in endeavoring to get some worthless fellow returned as Superintendent, or shall we be very merciful and attribute it to their inordinate vanity, blinding them so that they are unable to see themselves as others see them. Mr Munro and Co., may depend that the general public know how to estimate their gush of quasi patriotism at its true value, while pitifully forgiving the harm they may do us in the eyes of the readers of your paper who do not know their calibre 'so well as we Westportonians. Mr Munro and Co., should remember that the Superintendent is one of the first politicians in the Colony, as such he is very sure to lean to the side of the province which is able to return him again to the chair which he must perforce vacate every four years, Any one wishing to further the interests of this community should endeavor to place every man on the electoral roll. Other questions which cannot bo too much agitated are the equalization of representation and taxation of the G-oldfields, in more fair proportion with the law affecting the farming and squatting communities. These and many other questions might occupy some of the spare thought and time of true reformers. Let us hope that Mr Munro and Co., will commence by reforming themselves, and when they have worked a radical reform in that quarter they may be of some little use in saving the Colony from the political stagnation which threatens to involve it in ruin.—l am &c., Peo Bono Publico. Eochfort, March 13,1873. [For remainder of news see 4th ■page.]
