LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Telegrams report that Clancy, convicted of connection with the Carl murders has been sentenced to death. An extensive fire has occurred at Watson and Hogarth's, wholesale grocers, Flinders Lane, Melbourne, destroying considerable property. The fire broke out on the 3rd, in the top story. The building was full of valuable stock, where spirits and tea were stored. The fire burnt down to the first floor, consuming all before it, and on the ground floor all inflammable goods were destroyed. The vaiue of the stock was £75,000, of which the total insurance was £69,103. Messrs Banks Brothers' soft goods warehouse was in great jeopardy, and damage to the exteut of £3OOO was caused by the hurried removal of goods. Their store caught fire several times and was only saved by the energy of the employees of the firm and the fire brigade. A right-of-way 10ft. wide divided the buildings. The loss by fire will not affect the import market except in candles, of which vast quantities were destroyed. On the 4th a murder was committed at' Hotham street, Emerald Hill. A constable's wife saw a man stab another in tbe street, who fell dead. Tho murderer's name is Edward Carolan, his victim's was Peter Stephens, a washer up in a Bourke street restaurant. Carolan, when arrested, attempted to stab the constable with the weapon previously used. A butcher knife 13 inches long in the blade.
