Oj Saturday last there was at least 17ft of water on the Buller bar at high tide, the -sea being at the time so balm that fishing boats from the port rode as safely outside as in the river. Owing to the very, slight ■ current of water down■•stream the tide made way further up the river than has been known for years past, large pieces of timber being carried up stream: for some .distance past Seaton and Riley's coal wharf at the ■ foot of Henley street. Yesterday th e schooner Aurora,. Chapman, • master, arrived from Lyttelton with a consignment of Canterbury produce for Mr ■ .George-Falla. She crossed tliG bar about 2 p.m., without difficulty, but just at entering the narrows the breeze fell off, and she •was met by the ebb tide, which prevented her making much headway up stream. The skipper got a boat and line out at the bows, and two sturdy oarsmen pulling there, aided t>y a sweep oar at the stern of the craft, gently towed tho Aurora toward the southward, where, away from the full force of the ebb current, she came easily up stream and moored at the upper wnarf. The s.s. Waipara io expected in this morning, and will go on to the Ngakawhau to load with coal.
