The Cabinet decided, with regard the case of Mr Eyes, that his resigt tion of his present appointment won he accepted, and that his future ei ployment in the public service won depend upon the result of the leg proceedings he has taken for lib against some of the complainants. Though urging that a steamer should once again proceed south with supplies, our contemporary says:—" We admit that the people in these, outlying places are doing no good either to themselves or to the Country. They certainly are not settlers. Nor are they explorers or prospectors, for they keep as near the sea shore as may be ; begging a little, fishing and shooting a little, and sleeping a very great deaL They have, perhaps, already cost the Country-quite as much as if they had been maintained —fed, lodged, and clothed—in an asylum. Among the facts to be occasionally got hold of by dipping into that usually most uninteresting publication the New Zealand Gazette, is this one —that there are 22 full-fledged Maori ministers in the Colony, duly entitled to the prefix " Keverend," and empowered to perform the ceremony of marriage. Of these two are Wesleyans, and the whole of the remainder belong to the Church of England, The number of the latter is likely to be still further increased before long, as five Maoris are preparing for holy orders at Auckland, in addition, probably, to others elsewhere. . An active canvass has been made in Clyde for shareholders in the dredging company, but it is considered the high price of shares, will deter many from speculating. In Alexandra, £I2OO was subscribed; the cost of a plant, consisting of iron boats,«team engine, and all other gearings complete, and moored iu the Molyneaux, is estimated at about £2500 to £4OOO.
At the sitting of the Besident Magistrate's Court, at Alexandra, Otago, last week, the Kesident Magistrate stated that so long as he occupied the Bench, it was not his intention to allow the number of the hotels in the district to be increased, he would do all in his power to prevent new licenses issuing. In his opinion there were too many hotels at the present time in the ■various digging townships. In noticing the opening of the new theatreat Wellington, the Independent reporter says : —The aristocracy of the city was strongly represented,-and of course the camp followers of" society" were there in force, represented by excolonels, ex-captains, ex-majors, ber•gammotted dandies, and all the forms •of supercilious inflatedness, which was very useful in the way of showing what it takes to make up a world. An accident happened to a Maori •at Matapihi lately. It appears bis •curiosity was aroused, and with bis ■right hand he tried to stop one of the wheels-of Messrs Ellis Bros, reaping inachines, when in full working order., He has only got two fingers on that nand now, and these.are rather loose. It is reported that Mr Cucksey, a music-seller in Auckland, has made an important discovery in respect to saving gold by a new method of treating tailings. The new plan is said to be most effectual in saving the finest gold in the smallest quantity. Mr Cucksey is about to apply for a patent so as te secure some benefit from his dis•covery.
