EXTRACTS.

Two practical jokers in Virginia town who were left in charge of numerous babies on a social occasion while the mammas enjoyed a dance, changed the clothes of the little darlings, a:id arrayed each one in strange habiliments. The mothers after an hour or so of devotion to Terpsichoreau delights, took their baby vestments and the dears little forms therein contained, and retired to thair respective and once happy homes. On preparing the little ones for the crib, sexes had changed—girls were boys, and boys girls—-and with one universal yell the outraged maternals set out on a baby hunt. At last accounts, almost all had succeeded in recovering the lost heirs; but the wags kept out of the way of those matrons as much as possible. writing to the Australasian says : —"When a man reaches so bad an eminence as that achieved by Dv J. P. (Judas Pecksniff?) Murray, little incidents illustrative of his character aud disposition crop up abundantly. I am told that when the doctor was ou the resident staff of the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum, he desired leave of absence for two or three davs The day alter his temporary departure the Asylum authorities were startled at the somnolent condition of the inmates. ■ The poor old folks were all asleep, and snoring heavily the whole day long. Upon inquiry, it transpired that Dr Murray 1 had devised a novel way of keeping his elderly charges quiet aud comfortable during his absence. He had administered to each of them a couple of grains, of morphia—a dose which I understand to be so powerful that it is only administered in extreme cases " A writer in the Australasian says:— When a number of clerical representatives were leaving South Australia for the Anglican Conference in Sydney, one of their member, who, lam told, "has a royal love for a sovereign," sought to obtain some abatement in the passage money for a quantity, "There are so many of us going to the conference can't you take us cheaper j-" pleaded the dignitary; " we have two bishops, one dean 'one archdeacon' one stipendiary magistrate, one justice of the peace, four ladies, and one servant. T io steamboat agent looked doubtful. After reading up his instructions, how-' ever, a brilliant thought struck him. " Ob, yes, we can manage it, I think we'll put you dovvu as a theatrical company." A Pious Carrier.—A Scotch carrying firm in the last century announced that a waggon would leave Edinburgh for Inverness' every Tuesday, God willing; but on Wednesday, whether or no!

OPINIONS OF THE PUE3S. NELSON COLONIST. ' "Wo have received a copy of Messrs Eeid and Co.'s almanac for 1873, and can fairly recommend it as containing a large amount of useful information, specially selected for the trading and mining communities of the Coast, and therefore valuable for reference everywhere. The type, arrangement, and general " get-up" is very creditable, and this the fifth yearly publication of work, is even better than the good ones that preceded it. NELSON EXAMINEE. We have received a copy of the " West Coast Almanac and Directory for 1873," published at Westport and Grreymouth by Eeid and Co. Besides the calendar, it contains about 180 pages of information of a highly useful and varied character, including a full directory for the West Coast towns, rolls for the different electoral districts, mercantile and mining statistics, and much general intelligence. So useful and complete is the work, that it must prove highly serviceable to all persons having business with the West Coast, or seeking information in respect to it. WEST COAST TIMES. It is excellently compiled, and will be found to be a valuable book of reference on many local matters of interest. In alluding to the Almanac for 1871 the same paper says :—The almanac is one of the most admirably compiled issues of the kind that we have yet seen produced on the Coast. Besides the usual calendar there are 150 pages of mining, mercantile, and other information, besides any number of tables, " useful hints," and such items as constitute that valuable volume "Inquire Within." The paper and letter-press are in keeping with the excellence of the production otherwise. The printing and pre aration of the work were done by Held and Co., of Westport, but the contents are apparently made applicable to general use on the West Coast, or in similar mining districts." INANGAIIUA HERALD. This is the fifth year of publication, and each succeeding volume appears to be a considerable improvement upon its predecessor. As a hand-bood of useful information appertaining to the portion of the Colony where it is inlended.to civulate, its usefulness cannot be over-estimated, while in its general information the " West Coast Almanac" will not bear unfavorable comparison with any of the more pretentious almanacs published in the. colony. GREY VALLEY TIMES. We have received a copy of the " West Coast Almanac and Directory for 1873," published by Reid and Co., Westport and Grey mouth. This work has now attained the fifth year ot publication, and the present edition is one of the best publications of the kind issued from the West Coast press. ROSS GUARDIAN. It is quite a thick volume, and contains upwards of 200 pages of reading matter, from which a fund of useful information may lie gleaned. Messrs Ueid and Co., of Westport and Greymouth, are the printers, and as a specimen of typography, it does them infinite credit. LYTTELTON TIMES. The " West Coast Almanac," for 187-'?, has been issued by Messrs Reid and Co , of Westp >rt, Greymouth, and Charleston. It is decidedly well got up in even rescect, and contains a large amount of useful information in convenient fo*m. TIMARU HERALD. We have to thank the publishers, Messrs Reid and Co., of Westport and Greymouth, for a copy of the West Coast Almanac for 1873 The almanac, beyond containing the usual useful information of such publications, has much matter of interest hearing exclusively on the West Coasl goldfields. OTAOO DAILY TIMES. We have received a copy of the West Coast Almanac and .Directory for 1873, published at Westport by Messrs Reirl and Co. It contains a quantity of information, both of a local and a general character, and is welt printed throughout. WANGANUI HERALD. We have received from Messrs "Reid and Co. a copy of the West Coast Almanac for 1873. The book is com pilud particularly for a gold digging population, containing every information pertaining to that branch of industry. An excellent directory of the townships on the coast is given, also much of the matter usually found in works of a similar kind. The typographical portion of the work is most excellent, while the advertising support given to the book is full commensurate with its merits. ROSS NEWS. This work contains in addition to some very useful tables, a Westland Directory, Farm and Garden operations, The Mining Companies Liabilities Act, digests of the Nelson Licensing Acts, and Westland Public House Ordinances, Useful Law Items, a Telegraphic Guide, Items from the Stamo Acts, West Coast Statistics, and other useful information. Times Oifice, Westport.
