GRAVES & FLEMING V. STITT BROTHERS.

(To the TSditorofthe Westport Times.) Sik,—ln your issue of the 7th inst. there appears a letter signed by Alexander Stilt, and relating to a case heard before the R.M. on the 28th •January last, in which he was defendant. We think for his own credit as an honorable man, and for the sake of his good name, it would be better for him not to bring the case again before the public. He is not satisfied with stating the plain facts of the case, this would not suit his purpose, but he would make it appear that we had sent Robinson to his store for the purpose of examining his books, this we deny; and as every one knowt. who heard the evidence, no imputations of the kind were made either hy the Magistrate ■or by Stitt's counsel, therefore such imputations of Bit Stitt's must be the chimerical productions of his too fertile imagination. In conclusion we would advise Mr Stitt to practice before he preaches commercial morality. If his ledger, as produced in Court, is •evidence of his idea of commercial morality, we would be very sorry in•deed to be judged by the same high moral standard.—Yours, &c, GrEATES AITD FIEMIXQ. (To tlie Editor of the Westport Times.) Sir,—Will you kindly allow me a small space in your paper to reply to a letter signed Alexander Stitt. He says that I, knowing the case of 'Graves and Fleming v, Stitt Bros, was likely to come off, went into his counting house and examined his ledger, without his knowledge. Now, sir, at the time he alludes to, there was no talk of the case going into Court, or had Mr Fleming the smallest idea that I had seen Pell and Atkinson's account, as for Mr Graves, he was not here, but Graves and Fleming, knowing that I often assisted A. Stitt to make out his accounts, and also post his books for him, they naturally thought that I knew more of the case than I did. Next, if I wanted to give any information to my employers, would I not have referred to the journal to see if the goods were entered there, as there was nothing in the ledger but dates and folio's and accounts. I never looked at the journal, and when I closed the ledger I was as wise as when I opened it. A. Stitt makes a great fuss of my going into what he calls his counting house, I did so at his own request Celling him as I have often told him, •that I had not time to stop away from my business. I have repeatedly left Graves and Fleming's after LI o'clock •of a Saturday night, tired after a hard day's work, and went to Stitt's next morning, Sunday, and worked at his books up to 10 and 11 o'clock on Sunday night, to oblige him. When church time would come, A. Stitt was off to show his moral head amongst the congregation of St. Johns, leaving me hard at work. If there was anything dishonorable in my opening a ledger after having assisted him with his books on and off for the last four years, and giving no one information about him or his affairs; I will leave it to people to judge of more extended ideas than A. Stitt. A gentleman has told me that he is doing all he can to injure me. I thought at the time how like the man. going about to find some one who is ignorant of the facts, into "whose ear he will pour some of the spleen that is now choking him No matter who the individual is that incurs this man's displeasure, he is sure to be rewarded in the same way. Confirming the old adage—Revenge is svteet to the mind •of the &c.,*c.,—Yours &c, W. F. Robinson. [For remainder of news see 4tth page.~]
