The Timaru ' Herald 1 says that; " sundry skeleton railway bridges recently erected on the line between Timaru and the Washdyke are sad specimens of high bungling in the art of building, and wiii prove, if left in their present state, veritable deathtraps for railway travellers in the future." Our contemporary concludes by saying that if the Government " slight this warning, we shall some day have the grim satisfaction of being able to say ' we told you so,' when we chronicle a frightful railway disaster occurring at one of these bridges." We (New Zealand Herald) learn from a passenger who arrived by the Dakota that on the passage from New York to San Francisco that vessel was in a frightful gale of wind in the Straits of Magellan for two days. She lost two anchors, and was only saved from destruction by steaming head to wind with all her might for five days. Sailing vessels round the Horn, but steamships go through the Straits. Some town sections in New Ply. mouth have been sold as high as £l2 10s per foot. Taranaki is looking up, and iron sand is the cause. The Wellington Independent urges that the Legislative Council should be made " more popular,' and with this view says "it is high time" it were elective. A. Nelson paper states that a young named G-eorge Croudis lately walked from Nelson to Spring Creek —a distance of more than GO miles—in one day. • The Marlborough Express comes to"" the conclusion that Marlborough is " not so over-taxed as over-civilised," in having so large a staff of officials. The first Chinese marriage in the Mount Ida District was solemnised at Naseby, on 18th instant. The ' Lyttelton Times '' states that Mr A. Burnes, the general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, with the necessary staff, is on board the Cissy, which is expected to arrive at Lyttelton about the end of the current month. The Herald urges the formation of a " non-shouting society "in Auckland.
