The Duke of Edinburgh has gone to Germany with matrimonial intentions regarding the daughter of the ex-King of Hanover. A site in Greenwich Hospital has been granted for a monument to the naval officers who fell in the New Zeawars of 1863 and 18G4. Au advertisement appears in the Oxford papers for 500 farm labourers to so as navvies to New Zealand. Grace has been appointed London Manager of the Bank of New Zealand. Lee, lecturing on New Zealand resources, has made many converts. Trollope's letters from New Zaaland speak highly of the colony, and many anecdotes of his sojourn have beeu published in the London papers. Uneasy feelings prevail. The English press writes strongly on the Khivan question, and urges a firm unfettered policy on the part of England, and points out the danger created by a secret treaty made two years ago between the Shah of Persia and Russia, whereby the Valley of Aterk was ceded to Russia. The rumoured intention of Germany to purchase Silagoa Bay is denied. A fusion of Orleanists and Legitimists in France is again rumoured. Discount is easy. The ' Observer' states that Schuvaloff was unsuccessful in his mission in modifying England's attitude respecting Russian policy in Central Asia. England has declared her intention ot securing Afghanistan against attack, if Russia annexes Khiva. Russia proposes treating the Khiva and Afghanistan difficulties as belonging to the general Central Asian question. The German Emperor visits St. Petersburg in April, hut it is deci3d
at St. Petersburg that the interview is in any way connected with the Khivan question. Money abundant. The ship Northfleet, bound for New 1 Zealand, foundered with 250 souls, principally navvies. Another, telegram says:—» The ship Northfleet, for Hobart Town, sunk at Dungeness, through coming into collision with a steamer. She had 412 emigrants on board, and only 100 were landed safely. Sargood, of Sargood and Sons, warehousemen, and a member of the Victorian Board of Advice, is dead. The Australian December mail is delivered. Sir James Ferguson has arrived.
