FATAL FIGHT AT WESTBURY, TASMANIA.
A recent telegram mentioned that a fatal Tight had occurred in Tasmania, resulting in the death of one of the combatants. The ' Cornwall Chronicle' supplies the following particulars of the shocking occurrence whereby Thomas Lindsay Field, eldest son and heir of Mr Thomas Field, of Westfleld, lost his life from injuries received in a pugilhtic encounter with another young man named Scaton Williams, a son of the Pev. Mr "Williams, of Yv'estbury. The deceased young man had hut recently attained his majority, and was universally beloved and respected for his genial kindness of disposition and upright conduct. An enmity, which was chiefly attributed to the fact of Willismg having been summoned -by Mr Field for trespassing, had sprung up between the two young men, and more than one little disturbance had taken place between them. The deceased had heard a rumour about Westbury some months ago, to the effect that Seaton Williams had asserted he would punch deceased's head. This led him to send a challenge to Williams. They met not far from the-cricket field where one had been playing, and fought for two hours and a half, but until the last half hour no serious damage was doneField then received several severe falls, and in an effort to rise from the last he fell back senseless. He was so weak that he could not bear removal to his father's house, but was taken to,the house of the police superintendent, where he died on Sunday morning The medical testit mony given by Drs. ltock and M'Oreery, st the inquest, proved that death had been caused by concussion of the brain, exhaustion, and effusion of blood on the 'brain combined. Williams has been committed for trial for manslaughter.
