WESTPORT ATHENEUM.
An emergency meeting of subscribers was held at the Post Office Hotel, on Tuesday evening. Dr Giles in the chair. The meeting was convened for the purposo of discussing the question of the advisability of securing some site for the building contiguous to the present township, in»preference to the building being shifted to the new township site. The general opinion expressed Was that its removal as contemplated would cause great inconvenience to subscribers, and tend to a decrease in subscriptions, as the Atheneum would be too far away from the inhabited portion of the town to bo of any use to the public. After discussion it was suggested that the building might be placed on one of the streets crossing Palmerston street, not required as a thoroughfare, where it might remain until the present movement of business premises had ceased, and the centre of the
town become more defined. It was decided that prompt action should be taken as the contractors for removal of the government buildings had already shifted the Atheneum building into Palmerston street. The following resolution, proposed by Dr Thorpe and seconded by Mr Humphrey, was carried unanimously: " That tho Chairman communicate with the Government, and request them to grant a site for the building to be suggested by the Chairman." Further action was deferred until the annual meeting of the subscribers, appointed to be held this evening.
