LATE ENGLISH NEWS.

The'funeral of Bishop Goss at Liverpool w r as attended by eight Roman 'Catholic prelates aud some hundreds of •clergy. Archbishop Manning preached 'the sermon.

The last accounts of the potato crop in Ireland are moro satisfactory, the •extent of the disease, although very great, has been less than was apprehended. Large quantities of potatoes •are being imported from France, Holland, and Belgium.

The Pope has added to tho list of •of Saints the names of the late Queen Maria Christina of Naples, Nicolas Ton dor Flie, the French priest; Jean •do d'Ars, and Pope Eugcnius 111.

Great floods have again occurred in "(he North Riding of Yorkshire, owing to Ihe rapid melting of snow, which had fallen in great -quantities. The Bishop of Gloucester, in a late 'sermon, referred to the controversy respecting the Athanasian Creed, and •expressed his own conviction that the •clauses most objected to were sanctioned by Holy Scripture, and recommended faith and charity to all. The horse disease has appeared in 'several places in Devonshire, and is ■especially severe in Tiverton and its vicinity.

The London ' Telegraph' says that the late Sir David Baxter bequeathed the enormous sum of five hundred thousand pounds to the Free Church of Scotland, and lilty thousand to the University of Edinburgh.

A fleet of five German men-of-war is now being fitted for a cruise arouud the world under the command of Admiral Werner.
