Shearing in Otago is now nearly finished in many parts of the province. The weather has been magnificent and the clip is good. The flax industry in Ofcago is still progressing. At one mill alone at Blueskin, nearly £-1900 has been paid during the past year, for wages, and raw material.
It has been denied that tho General Government have made overtures for the purchase of the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway. The promoters of
tho lino say there is, no necessity for the purchase at all. The Government are hound to pay eight per cent upon £70,000 —the anticipated cost of its construction; or, at all events, to provide what may he necessary to make up such a dividend after the earnings of the lino have been credited.
On all portions of the Timaru downs (the 'Herald' reports) the crops are looking admirable, in fact, it would be scarcely possible for them to look better. iFrom their present appearance, we should say that harvest would commence in some instances very early in January, and that before the end of that month tho reaping machines would he in full swing.
