The new Australian line is organised into a regular corporation under tho laws of New York, with a total capital of 200,000,000 dollars, taken by seven gentlemen in New York and California. Directors : New York, Messrs Webb, Wood, and Lowry ; California, Messrs Lloyd and Lewis. President and Vicepresident, Messrs Mills and Butterworth. The line is expected to be a great success, and the Californian papers consider that a subsidy is certain. WELLINGTON. Mr Brogden's navvies, ex Jessie Koadman have struck for eight hours, at Gs, with rations, or 7s, without. A deputation from Blenheim, ineluding the Mayor of Blenheim, Captain Bailie, M.L.C., Mr C. lied wood, Mr Dodson, and others, interviewed the Premier, asking for enquiry into the conduct of Sheriff Eyes. The Premier promised to grant it if the charges were made in writing. NAPIEB. The rifle match between Napier Hide Club and Dunedin City Guards was won by the former —411 to 330. Owing to general complaints of scarcity of labour, Government have knocked off roadmen to assist harvesting. DUNEDIN. Messrs Brogdeu's navvies, ex Christian M'Ausland, have struck. The manager offered 6s a day of eight hours. Forty accepted, the rest remaining out. The Otago team is said to bo the weakest ever chosen for the Interprovincial cricket match. The Waste Land Board of Otago have agreed to sell a block of 10,000 acres of land at Tapanui. The Chamber of Commerce is petitiouing that the subsidised Fiji steamer should run through to the Southern ports. The Jockey Club programme shows stakes to the amount of £llOO. It is intended to institute a Derby for 1874, and a large amount for a Handicap, on the samo principal as the Melbourne Cup. The Synod has closed. The south coach was upset at Green Island recently. Several passengers, including the Eev. Mr Williams, Baptist Minister, were injured. There was a cartridge explosion at the head-quarters' drill-shed which did some damage to the building..

CHEISTCHURCH.
The Christchurch Exhibition was opened on the 16th by the Governor with great eclat, in presence of a large concourse of people. The anniversary sports were witnessed by the Governor and suite and ten thousand spectators. A ball was given to Lady Bowen in the evening. The Opera and all places of amusement were crowded---
altogether the 22ad anniversary was the most successful ever celebrated. The exhibits ab the Interprovincial Exhibition are less numerous than deBired, but the short time for preparation accounts for it. The flax from 'Otago, Canterbury, Auckland, Marlborough, and Wellington,are represented as making the best department in the Exhibition. Iu wools, Canterbury and Otago only are represented; the exhibits are not numerous but are very fine. In timber thero is a magnificent display, the North Island being well represented, as also Canterbury and Otago. Machinery and carriages are poorly represented. Of woollen manufactured goods, Messrs Burns, of Mossgiel Mills, Otago, send a spleudid variety ; Messrs Wcbley Brothers, of Nelson, also contribute tweeds. There is a fine show of preserved meats from Canterbury and Auckland. Kauri gum, glue, wines, cordials, beer, spirits from the Otago Distillery, manufactures in native woods, cheese, and butter are all well represented. Of minerals, there is a remarkably fine show, also building stone. Of grain—from Canterbury and Otago, there is a large display of magnificent samples.
