MUNICIPAL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the committee appointed to promote the establishment of a municipality in "Westport, was held at the Empire Hotel last evening, to consider what action should be taken to expedite the progress of the petition now and for some time past unaccountably delayed. Such meeting being held at the request of several residents who had expressed annoyance at the obstruction made to their strongly expressed wishes. All correspondence and telegrams refeniug to the subject which have passed between the Committee and the General and Provincial Governments, were read and discussed, and ultimately the following resolutions were adopted:— Mr Fisher proposed, and Mr Bailie seconded, ''That this Committee made acquainted with the correspondence received by the Secretary with reference to the delay in declaring the town of Westport a municipality, which correspondence appears to throw the blame on the Crown Lands OffiV.e at Nelson, directs the Secretary to write to the Commissioner, and request that the Committee may be informed of the cause of the obstruction with a view to its removal,"
Mr Suisted proposed, and Mr J. Hughes seconded, " That the whole circumstances connected with the petition be laid before the Colonial Secretary, and a request made that an enquiry be instituted in the matter." The meeting was then adjourned until Wednesday next.
