INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS

An amusing foot race took place last week at Auckland, a professional pedestrian named O'Hare, giving forty yards start to Signor Donato, the one-legged dancer, in a race, the distance of which is not specified in the exchange from which we obtained the information. After an exciting race the pedestrian won by less than a yard. Donato attributes his failure to having looked behind him when the lookers-on urged him forward. He fairly hopped over the course,-and the enormous strides he took were really surprising.

Detective Kell gallantly captured, in Tawhaio's Country, William Moffat, accused of horse stealing and obtaining money under false pretences. Keli, with an orderly, followed Moffat for 300 miles, and overtook him at a native settlement. The orderly was fired at twice by the natives. Kell, however, effected the capture, the first ever made in the king country. In a recent letter to the ' Field,' Dr Kingsley stated that a few years ago the Maoris consumed no less than 30,000 sharks a year; and he expressed it as his opinion that tho late increase in the number of sharks in tho New Zealand waters were owing to comparatively few of them being now eaten l>y the natives, who prefer mutton.

With reference to the intercolonial regatta at Wellington, the 'Post' says:—"The preparations for our approaching interprovincial regatta are quietly being pushed on. Crews may be seen nearly every morning doing their steady practice, and generally tho clubs are striving to secure for Wellington some of the honors to be competed for. Wo hear there is some chance of a Melbourne crew coining over for the occasion, and there is almost a certainty that the majority of the provinces will be represented. Four at least of tho boats that will be out will bo from known English makers. We understand that it is by no means improbable that one of the Wellington Clubs will contribute the winning crew. The subscriptions have reached about £4OO.
