SECTIONS IN WESTPORT.
(To the Editor of the Westport Times) Sib.—Being plaintiff in the case Ward v. Hughes, I felt rather in a fix at the decision of the Warden, in saying he had no jurisdiction in the case, as its settlement affects me and most of the people in Westport. It involves the title of the people who have built property on the ground, and it involves the revenue. But the Warden distinctly states that he has no power to act, since the land was withdrawn from the Goldfields, still he has made- use of his power by issuing protection certificates to Mr Hughes three or four times, as can be proved by the books in the office, as well as to many other parties, but the order of the day now seems to be right against might, and there is no real protection forjproperty. Mr Fisher, being the
only professional man here, he pleaded first for Hughes, defendant, and then he pleads for Brewster, plaintiff, in both cases just the same. T!iis puzzles me, so I shall be glad to get information how to act.—Yours &c, John Wabd. [Mr Ward will see by reference to the Warden's remarks that the question is really one for settlement by the Waste Lands Board. Protection certificates have been granted since the notification in the Gazette of February last, for just what they were worth and nothing more. The people of Westport will act unwisely if they pay another penny for either business licences or protection certificates for sections on the reserve, until the question is decided. Ed. W. T.]
