The manager of tlio " Ngakawhau Coalmining Company" reports that an air drive has been put through to the rise of the seam, thoroughly ventilating the present workings, and allowing more faces to bo opened when required. The coal has also been found on the oast side of Mine creek, at a height sufficient to allow of its beinuworked by a self-acting- incline. This dis° covery is of great importance to the company, as it will allow them to extend their operations to any required limit without the ereition of pumping and winding machinery. As soon as a suitablo steamer is obtained the company will bo prepared to deliver first-class coal at Westport and the adjoining ports at a reasonable rate. At the last sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court at Lyell, four cases were heard, three being from Matatitiki. In the Wardens Court forty applications were made, and the work is increasing so rapidly that tho services of a constable as acting clerk is needed. The next sitting of the Court will probably occupy two days. The dispute as to sites for buildings at the Lyell has been settled satisfactorily. Sections were surveyed and allotted to applicants by Mr Warden Broad to their general satisfaction. Any further extension of the Lyell township will involve some little difficulty as there is no other site available, except on ground leased to Mr Pensini to whom in all probability it will be necessary to pay some compensation. Another vein of splendid stono was struck a few nights siaco in Anderson's tunnel.
In Thompson's claim, Boatman's, the reef has been again struck in the tunnel.
The Just in Time claim, have opened up a fresh leader, giving very satisfactory indications.
" Let dogs delight to bark and bite for tis their nature to," saith an old distich; but in these days of social progress and universal regeneration, it would seem that some bold enthusiasts have faith in moral suasion to c rrect even canine eccentricities, and hope by the benign influence of good jrocept and good example to bring even their pet doggies to a correct state of moral preception. With tbis view, good and laudable no doubt, they take their pets regularly to church, and it may be that the dogs are all the better for it during the rest of the week, but there is one little thing these fondly affectionate and enthuaiastic " dogists" oyer look. The/ forget to compel their canine friends to rehearse a lesson in good manners previous to the church bell ringing, and thus the dear creatures forget themselves oc-
ca3ionally, in more than ono sense of the word, thoy growl at times, or yawn, or wander discursively up and down the aisles, and in and out among the worshippers, and generally go on as well conducted dogs ought not. All of which may afford delight to their doatiug owners, or cause them, in silence and alone, to shed bitter tears of sorrow at the perversness of dog kind, but in neither case does the Sunday dog show at St. John's Church tend much to edify or gratify the congregation. We hear that Mr Percy Wakefield, late clerk to the Court at Reefton, has resigned hi 3 appointment, and is about to enter into partnership with Mr James Thorpe, as Mining Agents and Managers. Complaints are often made of the inconvenience attending the despatch of letter? to the Landing, which at present have to be entrusted to boatmen and travellers, there being no Post-office nearer than Reefton or Westport. As there aro now stores and places of business at the Landing there should be no difficulty in opening a sub-Post-office; which, while proving a great public convenience, would entail little or no additional work on the department, and cause a very small oxtra outlay.
