It is reported that gold has been discovered by some natives at Tongaporutu. The owners of the land, Taranaki natives, applied to the King for permission to open the goklfields. This was refused, so the natives intend to open the goldQeld on their own responsibility.
A. Deep Sea Fishing Company has been established at Lvttleton, with a capital of £13,000 in £1 shares. Earthquake shocks were felt at Wellington and Blenheim on the night of the 14th.
The Timaru people are cheering themselves with strong expectations of a payable goldfield being developed at Waiho, where two men have been working for two years drivitig for a lead, and who have recently found rough gold with quartz, along this drive.
Five Maoris have been poisoned near Napier. They picked up a parcel of arsenic by the roadside, and eat it thinking it was flour.
The Scandinavians on the railway have struck for higher wages. They are getting 5s per day now. The £4OO worth of gold lost by the overturning of Mr Coulan's buggy at Nokomai, Otago, has been recovered. The Dunedin ' Star' says that Mr Macandrew, on the defeat of the Stafford Government, offered to re-instate Mr Eeid in the provincial secretaryship.
