In explanation of that portion of the Financial Statement wherein, under the bead of Ordinary Expenditure, Clauses I to VIII, the Colonial Treasurer proposes to calculate upon a reduction during the remainder of the year, of £IO,OOO, upon the estimates brought down by his predecessor, we quote as under noted from Mr Vogel's previous statement. APPROPRIATIONS 1872-73. Class I. Public Domains, £5,290. Class 11. Public Departments £GS,69I 15s 9d. Class HI. Law and Justice, £41,269 16s. Class IV. Postal, £130,397. Class V: Customs, £49,991 5s lOd. Class VI. Native, £23,562 ss. Class VII. Miscellaneous, £27,134 12s lid. Class VIII. Militia and Volunteers £27,894 7s 6d. These appropriations as suggested by Mr Vogel exceeded the gross amount for similar items for 1871-72 by £12,222 Is 5d- Mr J. B. Gillies suggests the possibility of doing away with the necessity for this excess of expenditure and also making thereon a saving of £IO,OOO during the remainder of the year. He also expresses a belief that permanent reductions of £25,000 a year may be made on the estimates to bo brought down for next year.
