The Charles Edward arrived from the South on Wednesday morning, and left by the same tide for Nelson, taking several passengers from hence en route for Melbourne.

'I he ' West Coast Times' reports that a considerable improvement has taken place in the channel and also the bar of Hokitika, which has lately been rather indifferent, and making it difficult to navigate. The Lioness erassed the bar several times on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, without ex periencing the least difficulty. The p.s. Result, on Sunday last, was safely steered through the enUMnco channel of the Nile River, in six feet of water, mooring fast to the Bridge, where cargo was discharged the following morning. Tho sea being calm, Captain Kileyrauhis boat through the Hole in the Wall without difficulty, and will on future occasions, whenever practicable, make the River his harbor, to avoid the bumping about in the surf of the Charleston Basin.

The well known clipper schooner Lady Bird has been purchased by the N. Z. S. N. Co. and will bo sent to Sydney for a thorough overhaul ami strengthening, prior to being fitted with tho machinery of the Airedale. The Lady Bird when thus converted into a fist going steamer, will bo employed on the New Zealand Coast.

The Kennedy, on her run down from Nelson, brought a consignment of goods and powder for the Anatori river, but on account ol the heavy surf no boat could put off to recei re the cargo. She will call off there again on Sunday next.

The contemplated alteration of the s.s. Murray will now be proceeded with, which will necessitate the lying up, for a time, of this favorite West Coast trader. It is now intended, we believe, to lengthen her somo 1G feet amidships, which, in addition to increasing her carrying capacity, will also permit of enlarging the passenger accommodation of the steamer. The above alterations will be done at the workshop of Messrs N. Edwards and Co., where we learn that their steamer Wallace has also been receiving some improvements in her original design, in the shape of deck houses, which will add much to the oonvenience and comfort of passengers by this boat.

The s.s. St Kildaleft Wanganui last night at ten p.m. for Westport, with a full consignment of sheep and cattle for Messrs Seaton and Davidson. She will probably arrive here about midnight.
