NELSON GOLDFIELDS LICENSING ACT 1872.

The following digest will be found I to contain all points of necessary in. I formation:— Licenses are divided into three clauses, Ordinary, Accommodation, and Bottle License. Every house for which an ordinary license is granted, must contain in addition to the apartments used and occupied by the holder of the license at least two moderate sized sitting rooms, and three sleeping rooms, constantly ready and fit for public accommodation, aud, if not within a town, sufficient stabling and provender for four horses. The fees payable are for ordinary yearly licenses, £3O, for half yearly £l7. All licenses issued for a less period than a year shall, except as. otherwise provided, pay a fee at the same rate per annum as half yearly licenses. Accommodation Licenses may be granted and renewed by the Superintendent on such terms and conditions, aud either with or without payment (other than a fee of 10s)- as to him may seem meetTemporary Licenses may be granted by the Resident Magistrate of any district, for a period of three tnontus, or payment of £lO, and holders of Ordinary Licenses may he granted special permits to sell on race courses, and places of recreation, or on the occasion of balls or entertainments at Licensed Houses, between the hours of eleven at night and six in the morning, on payment of a fee of 10s, Provided that no more than six per. mits be issued to the same person in one year. General Plight Licenses are granted to holders of ordinary licenses, on payment of a further fee of £lO yearly, or £5 half ) early. Licenses, except for accommodation iiouses, may be transferred on payment of a fee of 10s. Notices of application to be kept posted outside the Court House, and on the premises, for three days previous to the same beino- omju ted. Applications for the granting or renewal of Ordinary or Bottle Licenses, must be made in writing; seven days prior to the same being granted or renewed. Notices must be posted outside the premises, and at the Couit House, and advertised by the Resident Magistrate in some newspaper circulated in the district. License holders must not absent themselves from their licensed houses for more than fourteen consecutive days, without permission of a Justice of the Peace. All licenses must be kept posted up iu a conspicuous place in the bar, and the name of the holder of the license painted in legible characters over the principal entrance to the house. Any room connected with a licensed house, whether detached or otherwise, shall be deemed part of the licensed house., and subject to the provisions of the act. The following clause is an important one to the holders of bottle licenses : " If the holder of a bottle license shall sell any spirituous liquors, ale, beer, porter, or wine, in less quantity than two gallons, unless the same shall be in bottles corked and sealed, capsuled and wired, or shall permit auy liquor sold by such persons to be consumed upon the licensed premises, he shall be liable to pay for every such offence any sum not exceeding fifty pounds." .All licenses issued will expire either on the 31st March, 30th June, 30th September, or 31st December. None will be granted for a longer period than one year, nor less than half a year.

If any person is convicted of drunkenness three times within the space of three calendar months, his or her name and description will be forwarded to all holders of ordinary and accommodation licenses in the neighborhood, with a notice not to supply such person with intoxicating liquor, for a period of one year, under a penalty not exceeding £5.
