NO ROADS.
(To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sir, —Tbe unfinished and ridiculous toad between Addison's and Charleston, or as it has been happily designated the "Mahomet's Coffin," appears to be quite forgotten and lost sight of. It would seem, indeed, as if nothing further was intended to be done by the Government or by any one else in the matter, but to let it die a natural death. If such be the case then % reflects disgrace upon the Government, and upon all who had anything to do with the making of that road. To allow it to remain as it is at present is monstrous —it is an absolute waste of public money—money spent which gires no return. It reminds one of some of the public works undertaken kthe British Government during the famine years in Ireland, when similar pieces of worthless and unfinished roads were constructed merely to afford employment to the crowds of people who were dying of starvation. Here hapily no such excuse can be pleaded It is to be hoped the Government will not leave the road standing jit is much longer, for at present it is of r.o service whatever. Of course, bo doubt, the great impediment is the want of funds for such purposes. But would it not be. a way out of the difficulty if the Government would complete the remainder of the road to Brown's Terrace at one end and to the Shamrock Lead at the other—a distance of only about two miles altogether—by forming a bridle track and abandoning for the present the idea of carrying the dray road through 1 A bridle track would be an immense contenience to Very many persons, both pedestrians and horsemen. At present one hears loud complaints because some such track as this I have featured to suggest has not been, or is aot proposed to be, constructed. Such J track would not cost much—a mere trifle compared to the original plan—ad it would give great and general satisfaction to the public. Hoping tbat the Government authorities will won turn their attention to the completing of this really important work, -I am, &c, POPULUS. Westport, July 16, 1572.
