ARRTVAT,S. July 18—Charles Edward, p.s., Whitwell, put back. DEPARTURES. July 18— Charles Edward, p.s., Whitwell, for Greymouth. The p.s. Charles Edward, which arrived here on Monday last, was compelled to keep to hor moorings until yesterday, being unable to discharge her cargo in consequence of rain and tempestuous weather. On Tuesday night she ran to the lagoon for shelter, remaining there until yesterday, when she steamed buck to the wharf and discharged. She left for Greymouth direct last evening, but, when nearly abreast tue Steeples, it was found that she steered badly from some mishap to the rudder. As a precautionary, measure Captain Whitwell put back ; and re-crossing the bar in safety brought the Charles Edward safely up to her moorings. The Wallaco delayed at Greymouth for some days, will arrive at Weatport this morning and, if possible, leave for Nelson at 8 p.m. The Lyttelton on hertrip from Ngakawhao to Nelson took up a full cargo of cotds, an.l will probably make a-series of run- to supply tho Nelson demand ; co:ii being still exceedingly scarce there. At the time wf her visit, to the Ngikawhao the river was extremely low, and the channel at the bar had narrowed owing to the late westerly gales, which as a rule hnvo a bad effe t on most of the West Const bar.-. Still the Lyt'olfcon, with a draft of 5 feet G in. to 6 fee', got in an.l out with little difficulty, crossing the bar, on the 13th, with a considerable sea on, it then being lowest neap tides. The recent rain will have u gond effect on (he Ngakawhao river, in clearing the channel and making it straight. and wide. We hear that some rocks near the wharf, which somewhat impede I the safe mooting of steamers, are in courso of removal.
The brigautine Harriet King, from Lyttelton to Auckland with a earge of grain, was wrecked on Thursday, the 4th instant, near Port Charles. Tho crew and part of the cargo were saved. Tho vessel is breaking up. Carjro insured in the Paeific for L4OO, New Zealand about LIOOO. A ateainer has been sent to her assistance. The Harbor Board's resolution deo'.arinnWellington an infected port, has boon re" scinded as illegal. Tho Melbourne ' Argus,'of the 29th ultimo, says:—" The Ilokifrika, a now iron clipper barque, constructed at home for Messrs Spenoe Brothers and Co., of this city, arrived at the Head* yesterday from London, via Port Natal, out had a dead beat up tho bay in consequence- of the northerly wind blowing." It is understood that the stearoe* Wallace will continue in the West Coast trade, and under oommand of Captain-Crcagh, while the Kennedy is undergoing au overhaul. It is ulsowstnted Mr Dillon is likely to bo chief <iflicer of tho Charles Edward/and that her present chief officer will take command of the schooner Ocean Bird, recently purchased by Messrs L'dwards and Co. It is proposed to start a company to construct a pier 480 feet in length (which would give seven feet of water at low tide, at the end of the pier) at Preece's Point, Coromandel, fl.nd to connect itsby a tramway with Kapanga township. The capital will be L3OOO, in 600 shares of L 5 each ; but, in order to provide sgainst unforeseen emergencies, power is reserved in memorandum of association to increase the capital by LIOOO. After bringing the Auckland members down to Wellington, the Luna visits the West Coast, with Mr Edwin, to survey the reported dangerous shoals. She then loads with coal at Greymouth for the Government.
