SELECTION OF NEW SITES.
On Friday last the selection of new sites, on the Colliery Reserve, took place at the Court House, Westport. Mr Commissioner Sharp having previously classified the applicants into five divisions, according to the value
and position of their property holdings, each person drew a ticket for priority of choice, and thereafter, in rotation, made selection from the numbered plan of the new township. The Hon. Resident Minister has accepted a tender for the construction of quarantine barracks, on Ripa Island, Lyttelton harbor. The successful tenderers are a Dunedin firm, and we are informed that their tender was £603 under the lowest Canterbury tender. The General Government have accepted the tender of Mr A. J. Smyth, Dunedin, for the erection of the new immigration barracks at Green Island. The contract cost is £4500. The unnsual circumstance of a Chinaman drinking himself to den th is reported to have occurrod at Cardrona.
