REEFTON
(from our own correspondent) The want of a suitable place worship, and the services of a residi clergymen are much felt here. It the earnest wish of all its members this district that a minister should provided and a church erected as 80 as possible. I am informed on reliable author! that the "Wesleyan Chapel, now] course of erection, will be opened i service in about four weeks. The first wedding performed in t! Inangahua district, took place I Monday week, the Rev. Flavell joinii the happy couple in wedlock. I hej also, of'several other matches as likej to come off on the next visit of| clergyman. Some gross mismanagement eiii in conducting the local hospiti Only two months ago the committ went to the expense of purchani a temporary building to recei l patients, and then had a balance funds in hand sufficient to meet ai moderate expenses for some time come. Since then up to the prese iime, they have had but one patie in the hospital, yet their funds arent nearly exhausted, and several tunates who have appJied, have bee refused admission and even medic attendance. I think it is necessary for the publ good, that some enquiry should 1 made into the circumstances as I how the institution is conducted. the present committee are not capab of fulfilling their duties, let the resign, and others more suitable I elected in their stead. The hall, now being built for tl use of the Eeefton Lodge of Odi fellows, is rapidly approaching con pletion. The formal opening of tl Lodge is expected to take place ontl 19th instant. The members of tl order here, purpose celebrating tl inauguration of the above Lodge bj: ball and banquet on Monday the 29s instant.
Provisions, especially flour, have bee very scarce for the last fortnigh owing to the late snow storm blockio up the old saddle bush road, and i consequence preventing anythii reaching us from the Grey side. Vei few provisions have arrived by« Buller road, as it appears that ta boats and waggons have been engas conveying machinery &c. There ajj tons of goods stored at the MiM waiting the track to be cleared] enable the pack horses to get througj The Provincial Government wej appealed to, and on Monday, Mr Mm! the overseer of works arrived I Reefton, from Q rev mouth, and imaj diately put on 40 or 50 men, so W in all probability the track will bever, soon opened. \There is not much interest ] mining matters, to mention at preset In Eeefton business is very <OT which does not seem to affect buildii operations, as new buildings are gou up in all directions. , Two Bmall rushes ha«re lately taw place, one at a gully at Yorkeys, at another at the junction of the Gree stone and Blackwater Creeks. m°°] cases the find has been in alluvi ground and the prospects are goo averaging from fivo to: seven pent weights to the load. These discover are of some importance, as tbeyfl probably lead to others of a simn
nature, and thus help to keep the " circulating medium " in motion, of which at present there is a " plentiful scarcity " everywhere. The Westland Battery is now in first-class going order, the only defect in it's working arising from the bad quality of fuel used. The stampers are fifteen in number, .five weighing SOOlbs each, and ten 3501bs each. When in motion they arouse the lively echoes of the neighborhood for some distance. I hear that the Westland company will, after crushing a certain quantity of their own stone, be prepared to accept, on reasonable terms, the crushing for other companies, who have not yet erected machinery. This will be a very great boon to the public.
