WESTPORT LAND QUESTION.

The following petition, praying for an extension of areas to be granted as business sites on the Colliery Reserve, is now in course of signature, and already bears the names of all the principal residents in Westport. To His Honor Oswald Curtis, Esq., Superintendent of the Province of Nelson. Sir, —We the undersigned, Merchants, Storekeepers, and others, holders and occupiers of business sites in the town of Westport, having heard from J Sharp, Esq, Commissioner, that it is the intention of the Provincial Government to survey a portion of the Colliery Reserve Westport, into sections.each with a frontage of 33 feet by 99 feet only in depth ; respectfully request that your Honor will be pleased to direct that a larger area be included in each business site to be surveyed, say to the extent as authorised under the ; G-oldfields' Act Eegulations, (seeiri clause), of thirty three feet, but by one hundred and tbirty two feet. In drawing your Honor's attention to the above, we have to point out the serious inconvenience we have for ] years past been placed under, by reason of the surveyed sections on the lower end of the Coal Quay Reserve, now—and lately occupied by us, having proved.far too small in area for the general requirements of business. We have further to point out, and to impress upon your Honor, that, apart from the foregoing reason, the purposes of public health, the preservation of property from fire, and other public j reasons which will readily suggest themselves to your Honor's considera- 1 tion, will, we trust, be found to favor j our request, and that your Honor will j be pleased to direct that the prayer of your memorialists may be acceded to, and that the same will be carried into effect without delay. And your mem- j orialists will ever pray.
