MINING ITEMS.
There has been rumours in circulation for several days past, that there is a probability of a rush taking place near the Arahura river. A party of miners have been prospecting some gullies and terraces near Mount Tuhua, which is situated about fourteen miles from the mouth of the Arahura river,, but although they have obtained gold in small quantities, there is nothing to indicate any immediate probability of a rush taking place. payable gold has at last been found in Tasmania. The Launceston 'Examiner' of a recent date says:—"About a week ago we announced that a rumor was afloat to the effect that a rich and extensive patch of alluvial ground had been discovered ou the property of Mr A. W. Brewer, near Bridport. The rumor turns out to be substantially correct, and some claims have already, we understand, been marked out on what the discoverers have named the Denison Diggings. Yesterday, some fine water-worn nuggets, the heaviest weighing close on 6dwts, were on exhibition at the Bank
of V. D. L., where they attracted considerable attention." A plan has been prepared by Mr Woolley, Surveyor of the Murray Creek reefs On it are shown the various claims taken up as gold mining leases, &c. on Anderson's, Shiels's, Adam Smith's, Sinnamon'a, and Kelly's lines of reef. The plan is being lithographed, and, as a guide to the large reefing district of Murray Creek, will be invaluable. A similar plan of the northern lines or Boatman's, Larry'b, and Painkillers, will shortly be prepared. A tubular boiler, patented by Howard, of Bedford, is in use at Coromandel, which is so constructed as to take into pieces, which can be easily carried over the higher ranges on a man's back. The difference in construction is said in no way to impair the strength or effectiveness of the boiler, nor yet to add very considerably to its cost. The Provincial Government of Taranaki have offered £IOOO reward for the discovery of a goldfield in the province. Gold is said to have been brought in by natives. The crushing returns from the Thames for the last month show that 7787 tons of stone yielded 16,050 ozs of gold. A party is being organised in Melbourne to proceed to the Cape Port Natal goldfields. During the financial year ended 31st March last, the revenue received by the Nelson Government from the Brunner coalmine was £6240 3s sd, and the expenditure in working it £5406 9s 4d. The Government of New South Wales have lately brought into force amended mining regulations, which are deemed to be specially fitted to meet the requirements of quartz-mining in that colony. The purport of these regulations is stated to be—that the amount of labor to be employed has been reduced to one man per acre, and the rental of leases has been reduced from £2 to £1 per acre. Special provision has been made for the prompt disposal of applications for leases, and and in this respect the Nelson Regulations might be very properly altered in accordance with those of that colony. The Wynyard Gold Company, of Avelonsr, has just paid a first dividend, and is the first gold mining company that has ever paid a dividend in New South Wales.
