WESTPORT IMPROVEMENTS.

The following is an extract from Mr Dobson's report to the Provincial Government as to the present state of Westport: I consider the Government buildings to be in great danger, and should recommend steps to be taken lor their removal immediately, and 1 should recommend that the end of the reserve fronting Wakefield street be adopted as the site for the offices, and that Palmorsfcon street be made up as far as that immediately. A contract is at present in hand for the formation and metalling of a dray track as far as Henly streot. This work should be continued to at least as far as Fonblanque street. n avenue should then be cut down the latter street, and wharves built there. With respect to occupying the reserve, as so many people are being washed out, it might be advisable to allow the occupation of tho frontago to Palmerstone street above Wakefield street The cost of carrying out these removals and construction of street will no doubt bo great, but I do not see ntf way to making any other recommendation.

Approximate estimate of making streets in Westport and removing Government buildings —£2893. I hardly think the work at present in band in Palmerston street will be sufficient to car ry the traffic that will be on it, if the town removes to the site I propose, and that it will require at least £IOO mor e to make it sufficiently solid. That will bring up the estimate to £3OOO in round numbers.
