a child two months old, joinod the steamer at Tiiuaru. On their arrival at Akuroa, they proceeded on shore to look at the township, leaving the baby in their berth. The steamer left before their ruturn, and had proceeded as far a* the heads before the crying of the infant led to the discovery that neither of its parents was on board. Captain Hart immediately 'bouted ship, aud steamed down the harbor to the amazement of tho AJcatoa people, who rushed down to ascertain what was the matter. Meanwhile, tho father and mother of the child had availed themselves of the steam launch, to convey them to the head of tho bay, in order th it they might go over to Pigeon Ray, and proceed to Lyttelton by the TTaloyou. The launch had proceeded for some distance beforo the return of tho Maori was observed. Her head was at once turned towards Akaroa, and after the lapse of some minutes the parents of tho child were placed on board the Maori, and she resumed her passage to Lyttelton, where she arrived about two hours later than would have been the case but for this singular and amusing contretemps.
