Captain Whitwcll, of the p.s. Charles Edward, reports that on the evening of the 29th lilt., when three or four miles of Cape Farewell lighthouse, he sighted a schooner bottom upwards, apparently a vessel of somo forty or fifty feet keel, and floating three or four feet out of water. Captain Whitwcll steamed round the craft, but the weather being thick and darkness approaching, he could obtain no clue as to her identification. The same craft was seen on Tuesday by Captain Palmer, of the s.s. Murray, about three quarters of a mile west of the> spit; but a heavy sea running he was unable to take her in tow. Ho describes her as a new vessel, apparently uninjured, having black bottom, white top si es and bulwarks, and a false keel projecting about six inches over the stern, composed of two long lengths and one short piece in the centre. The name of the craft was not visible, and nothing was seen floating near her but one of the gaffs. Captain Palmer is of opinion that she has not been long in her present position, and thinks she will prove to be the Ocean Bird, lately from Greynwuth. She will in all probability drift ashore near the spit, or be carried by tho current into Massacre Bay. An action brought against the owners of the steamship Nevada for sinking the barque A. H. Badger, off the New Zealand coast, some months ago, was commenced at the Supreme Court, Sydney, on March 26.
