Mr Bonar, of Hokitika telegraphed to Cap'.ain Leech on Wednesday saying that in all probability Captain Mackie of the Rangi toto would call at the port yesterday. In anticipation of this the steamer Result, went outside early on Thursday morning to tender the Melbourne steamer-, in order that Captain Mackie and Captain Leech mijht be afforded the desired interview, bit the R angitoto must have passed the port before the Result reached the offing, as no trace of her could be seen after the local tug got outside. The steamer Kennedy is announced to leave this port for Hokitika and Greymouth this evening about midnight. We learn by telegram that the steamer TVTurray intends leaving Nelson to-morrow for this port. The schooner Alice reached Charleston on Monday last, after a long and rough passage, from Dunedin. She has brought a full cargo of produce and general merchandise for Messrs i)wan and Co. A most singular circumstance occurred during the passage of the steamer Murray from Nelson to tlifc port. The vessel was off the land, between Cape Farewell and Rock's Point, when a squall caine on, accompanied by most viviH (l-i— Tl.O uMsi-iu-au iignr, the side lights, and all the lights on deck and in the cabin were sudde ly extinguished. The lamps, as a matter of course, were immediately relit ; but shortly afterwards they were agiin extinguished at the same moment of time. It is worthy of remark that the lamps in the engine-room continued to burn brightly all the night. A private telegram from 'Wellington states that the Government have decided upon fortifying Lyttelton harbor, and that they have determined upon erecting a battery o I heavy guns upon the island opposite to a place known as Diamond Harbor. The construction of the work will, it is supposed, place Lyttelton in a very good position to repel the attacks of any hostile cruiser that might visit the place. It is stated, on good authority, that instructions have been forwarded to the harbor-masters throughout the Colony, to the effect that all persons connected with their respective departments are to be instructed in gunnery. The telegram goes on to say that the Government have forwarded to England an order for a number of heavy guns of the newest make.
