11 Some months ago a small island in i lie Caribbean Sea, known as the Jimita, and about SCO miles south of Irinidad, while being explored under i Redirection of Agassiz, was found to eontain gold. The rock is quartzose, lid quietly a few individuals obtained i |:|ossession of the island, and these inIJividuals —all Americans—will not dis- ■ I pose of an interest, although last week : offers from English capitalists |gi London were received—information ] ||aving reached them through the Cus- ; torn House, it is supposed, although . I every arrangement had been made to ; [Jeep the matter as quiet as possible. ■ 13lie gold is free and easily amalgama- j I ted, and in purity in the veins of the Buartz. Forty veins have been dis- < tiovered on the island, and five are now t I" leing worked, and the ore is being re- ' pceived from ships at Centreville works, ] |jn Greenville, in Hudson county. The •, f works are running night and day. ; hlhe ore is now, with perfect machinery, i [yielding 60 dollars per ton, and they ] Tare only getting one-third of the gold, pbut the tailings are being saved with i [the view of ruuning them through the i machine being contracted i T'for. All the gold ore seen by our ( [ reporter, who tested the specimens [ first as dumped out on the wharf, will • I yield 180 dollars per ton. This great ; r discovery is believed to be likely to I build up a very important enterprise : pin the Hudson county. The ore is as Vch as the richest ores of California : id Venezuela. ,
