The schooner Dunedin, Captain Stawart, consigned to Mr Jno. Munro, was towed in by the Charles Edward last evening. U'his vessel left Dunedin on March 4, via Oavnaru, and has brought a general cargo, chiefly produce. The steamer Murray may bo expected to reach this port to-day from Greymouth, on her way to Nelson. The steamer Wallabi left Greymouth for Wanganui on Wednesday morning. M'Meckan, Blackwood & Co.'s line stea-ner Albion arrived at the Bluff from Melbourne Wednesday morning. Telegrams of the news brought by her will be found in another column. The Wellington correspondent of the " Otago Tally Times" states that Mr Burne, the chairman of tho N.Z.S.S. Company, went home by the last San Francisco steamer, and it is understood that his ol ject is to purchase some London liners, with a view of disturbing the very profitable monopoly which Messrs Shaw, Saville, and Co. have for years enjoyed of direct passenger aud cargo traffic between this and London. It is also probable tbat when at home, Mr Burne will arraugo for the purchase of another steamer, or perhaps have one built especially for the conip iny. The mission schooner Southern Cross, Caplain Jacob, will sail for Norfolk Island about the 10th of this month. Captain Tilly, formerly in command of the vessel, will accompany the mission party during the forthcoming cruise. The Bev. Mr Codrington, chief of the mission, arrived in Auckland per City of Melbourne. Copies of regulations for those who intend to offer themselves as candidates for examination as masters, mates, or engineers, for certificates of competency, also for those who offer themselves for voluntary examination in steam, can now be seen at any of the offices of Customs in the Colony. These examinations are held under the Merchat.t Shippit-g Officer's Examination A ct, 1870. It is intended, if a sufficient number of candidates offer themselves, to hold examinations in Auckland, Nelson, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. Whilst on her passage from Savu Sauvu, Levuka, the schooner Alice had a narrow escape from a waterspout. The spout rose right in her track, and she had to put about to avoid it. It travelled in the direction from Mokogai to Ganani, and passed within about 100 yards off the Alice, and came to .grief on the Mokogai Reef. The spout was about 30 feet in diameter.
