The Westport Times. TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1872.

In placing before our readers this issue in its enlarged size, it is opportune to Btate the chief causes of the change, and to point out that, though the pub-, lication will be less frequent than it has been during the past few weeks, the requirements of the district will, in the manner contemplated, wo hope, be more fully and advantageously represented. Evening papers seldom have more than a town circulation, and in such a large and scattered district, several notifications by that means only wouldnotobtain the necessary publicity. While we must do our predecessor the justice of having striven for tho weal of the district, by making the journal a daily publication, he will doubtless agree with us, after his short experience, in what the public may readily understand, that, to produce a sheet satisfactory in its detail, with such frequency, requires not only an unequal

amount of labor and expense, as compared with returns, but entails a I stretch of application which frequently renders the object desired less attainable than it otherwise would he. In publishing in the present form on Tuesday and Friday mornings, we are in hopes of considerably extending the circulation of the paper in the outlying districts. Copies will, be regularly forwarded by runners from this office to the Inangahua and Lyell, while the Northern Terraces, Addison's, and Charleston will be punctually supplied each morning of publication. The most careful attention will bo given to furnis'iing the latest telegraphic intelligence, English, Intercolonial and Tnterproviucial, and on the receipt of any news of more than ordinary interest, our subscribers will be supplied with it in the form of a later or extra edition on or between the publication days. To monthly advertisers we have to offer the further advantage of having their notices inserted in the ' Charleston Herald ' at no additional cost, thus ensuring publicity in both districts four days in the week, to a larger extent than could in any other manner be accomplished. The local, general, and shipping news of interest will receive equal attention, and all matters affecting any portion of the community, will, to the best of our energies, be zealously advocated, and should the district shrjw, as we are in confident expectations it will, those signs of progress and encouragement to warrant a more frequent issue, we can confidently make the assurance that as the district advances so will our endeavours in acting as one of its public representatives.
