The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1872.
We have to announce that after the issue of this day's paper the proprietorship of the * Westpobt Times and Charleston Arous ' will be vested in Messrs R. C. Reid and Co., to whom Mr O'Gonor has transferred it. By the la.?t 'Gazette" we learn that the Provincial Council will meet for the despatch of business in the Provincial Hall, Nelson, on the 30th day. of April, 1872. The p.a. Charles Edward, from Nelson, arrived In port last night about nine o'clock, after a passage of twenty-two hour's. She sailed to-day about two o'clock, on an extended trip to some other ports than Greymouth and Hokitika, in charge of Captain Whitwell. The p - .s. Result returned from the Ngaku'waho, bringing with her eight tons of coal. She found about eleven feet of water on the bar. The coal was subjected to a trial on the return trip, and the engineer
declares it to be vastly superior to Newcastle coal, which he has been accustomed to use previously. Nothing now remains to be done but provide the necessary boats, and coal can be supplied there in any 1 quantity at about 5s per ton free on 'board to any of our coasting steamers. We copy the following from a Nelson "Gazette" of the 22ud instant:—"The atepayers of the Educational District of Weotport having neglected, on the day appointed for the -purpose, to elect six persons to form a local committer of education for that district, the Superintendent directs 'it to be notified that, in accordance with the provisions of clause 10 of the Education Act, 1863, he has appointed the following persons to form a local committee of education for the district of Westport, viz.:—• Robert Whyte, John Stuart Fleming, A. C. Soutar, Samuel Thorpe, T. Walsh, Timothy Sheahan. We copy the following from a private letter : —"My recollections of Westport are of a mixed character—grave and gay. When I first landed there were half-a-dozen houses facing the river, with a few Maorj wharies, which formed the town. During my stay it was rushed and deserted several times. Its population now are most likely beyond my ken. Sandflies and mosquitos in those days held their own and more. The trip I used to enjoy most was a canoe ride up the Orawaiti to a lagoon to shoot teal and paradise ducks. My impression is that the Oi-aw'aiti is the original outlet of the Buller river. In a heavy flood the Orawaiti and Buller conjoin, and make Westport an island. Let me propose to you an engineering question. Could not the •waters of the Buller be in part turned into the Orawaiti, so as to make the flood less disastrous ? If you make a pile by the development of this suggestion, please don't forget the prompter." Had our friend been here the last flood, he would have seen his suggestion accomplished without human aid. It is announced that the " Wanganui Chronicle " will appear as a daily mbrmiig journal on the Ist of April. Sir David Monro has been appointed visiting justice to Nelson gaol, and a member of the Committee of Management of the Nelson Hospital, in the place of David Hough, Esq:, 'who is going to Europe. Graham Lord Greenwood has been gazetted Clerk of the Warden's Court, at Ahanra, Grey district 1 ; and Percy Wakefield Clerk of Warden's Court, at Heefton. A lease has been granted to Caleb George Evans of three &cre3 for gold-mining purposes, situated at Ballarat Hill, Charleston-
