At the end of the meeting at a suggestion made by Mr Elliott, a list was handed round the table for the purpose of obtaining subscriptions to defray the necessary expenses for providing a boat and crew to compete in the next intercolonial rowing match, and between £ls and £l6 was at once subscribed.
It has often been said that good looks are only skin deep, but American sai'ors sometimes think differently. When the Nevada was in the Napier roadstead lately, the " Telegraph " says that one of the seamen on board was caught by the Chief Officer " looking ujrly "at hiin. Without more ado, the officer said to the sailor, "I guess it' you can't look pleasant, you had belter go ashore—there's the boat—■walk!" There is something in good looks after all.
