WHAT MONEY CAN DO.
Money has saved many a rascally back acquaintcl with the lash. O'Toole, who exhibited himself in a disgraceful manner lately to some children, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and fifty lashes. Had O'Toole possessed the means he might have obtained release on bail, and escaped from the colony. De Voeux, who did precisely what O'Toole is imprisoned and flogged for, deposited £IOO with ihe authorities, made his way to the Murray, hired a DU gsty> and passed into New South Wales.
De Yceux mixed in a society which obtained him admission to the Melbourne Club. Do Voeux, fastened to the triangle and flogged by Bamford, would have been a more instructive lesson to rascals of his type than O'Toole, though the latter be equally deserving of the punishment.—Melbourne " Leader."
