CHARLESTON.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESrOKDEST.) A meeting was held at the Literary Institute on Monday evening, for the purpqse of electing a committee for the ensuing twelve months. The Kiev. Mr Elavell was voted to the chair. A number of gentlemen were proposed, and a show of hands taken in order to ascertain the number of votes recorded to each. Considerable discussion then ensued as to the justice of non-sub-scribers having been allowed to vote. A. motion and amendment to the effect of for and against the committee being elected by the public or strictly by the votes of subscribers only were put to the meeting, when Mr Broad's amendment, that the committee as elected by the public be declared elected, was carried. Some of the gentlemen elected in that manner declined to act, as one of the rules of the Institute stated that the committee should bo elected by the subscribers. The chairman said in the face of that rule he could not accept the committee as proposed by the public. The meeting was then delayed in order to give parties the opportunity of becoming subscribers if they wished to do so. The committee was then very properly elected by the subscribers only. The District Court was opened on Tuesday morning. The only case before the Court was an insolvency, case, which had been adjourned from Westport last sitting; but the insolvent not having complied with the necessary forms it was still further adjourned until next sitting. Dr Giles held a liesident Magistrate and Warden Court on Tuesday day afternoon. In the Magistrate's Court a few cases of minor importance were heard, and in the Warden's Court a number of applications were disposed of. A meeting for the purpose of reorganising the Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday evening, at Wietzel's European Hotel. The Brigade has started under very favorable appearances, no less than fifty members having entered their names upon the new roll. The following officers were elected—Mr C. Weitzel, captain; Mr James Edwards, lieutenant-; Mr Sutton, treasurer; and Mr P. Bear, lion, secretary. The minor offices are also ably filled. A sub-committee was appointed to draw up a code- of rules to be submitted to the next general meeting. The St. Patrick school was opened on Monday last, under the superintendence of Mr Kirby, who has been appointed pro tern, Mr Delaney, the gentleman who has received the permanent appointment, not having arrived, but is expected by the next San Erancisco mail.
