The Westport Times. AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1872

The "Inangahua Herald" of Saturday reports another discovery of a quartz reef : Yesterday afternoon application was made by Thomas Tymens and party for a quartz claim on a new reef, situate on a tributary stream ncary Lanky's Gully. The stone is said to be very rich, and to resemble in appearance the quartz from Boatman's. For the benefit of our up-country readers we insert the following-:—Carbonic acid is the sovereign remedy for all troubles from flies and mosquitoes. A few da-ops evaporated in a room, or poured upon the clothes, will keep the winged pests at a safe distance; and if the pure crystalized acid is used no great annoyance will result to human beings. Restaurant-keepers ought to know this, and keep the swarms of fliss away from then- windows, where they settle and buzz to the torment of passers. During the month of January 585 ounces of gold reached Nelson by the boats from ' Golden Bay. Only 39 ounces were from W»iapu, and the rest from Collingwood.

The Government have succeeded in | effecting an amalgamation of offices and a reduction of exaenditure in Westland. Mr Harvey, Crown Prosecutor and County Solicitor of Westland, has been appointed District Judge of the Westland judicial district, and also Examiner of Titles under the Land Transfer Act. We believe that for the offices of Judge and Examiner combined Mr Harvey's salary does not exceed £6OO per annum. At Napier the drought still continues and sheep and cattle were dying on all sides. The Catholic Mission lost 20 head in three days. We leam from Wanganui that Mr M'Lean has finally closed with the natives for the purchase of the large block of land lying bet-ween the Turakina and the Rangitikei river 3. The purchase money will be paid to-day, and thus a large stretch of country will be open for settlement. As Captain Baldwin leaves Westport for Charleston in a day or two, persons desirous of availing themselves of the advantage of the Government Life Assurance have not much time to lose. Here, as elsewhere, Captai i Baldwin has been very successful, having obtained nearly forty proposals during his short stay amongst us.
