The Westport Times. AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1872

Tue annual report of the Athenasum Committee, published in another column, shows a most satisfactory progress in that institution during the past twelve mouths, and may bo accepted as an earnest of further improvement to be attained during the current year. "We believe that the exertions of the committee, and especially those of the honorary secretary, have contributed mainly to this satisfactory result, and to him as also to the members of the committee are the public indebted for the increased attractiveness and usefulness now afforded by this local institution. The public on their part have not been slow to respond to these efforts ; the subscribers have increased, and a general interest has been awakened in the well-being of the Institution. Twofifths of the year's iuccm3 having been furnished by the proceeds of an entertainment by the local amateurs, they too are deserving of a share of the general congratulation which such a pleasing condition of things calls forth. To future entertainments organised under similar auspices we may hope for corresponding results. With an increase in the number of subscribers, the subscriptions increased from £37 for the year 1870 to £sl for 1871. During; the last year the Provincial Government subsidy was reduced to £6O as against £9O for the previous year. The.balanceJn hand also shows a reduction as compared with that when the retiring committee took

office. This is fully accouuted for by the increased and necessary expenditure incurred during the past year. The sum of £SO baa been remitted homo for a supply of books, and £3G has been expended in the alteration and improvement of the building. The gcueral receipts, notwithstanding the reduced subsidy from the Government, show an incroase of £6O, and the expenditure upwards of £IOO op compared with the previous year. It is satisfactory to a degree to find that the institution is growing into public favour, and we see no reason to doubt but that the people of the district will continue a hearty support to one so highly deserving their liberal patronage.
