CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held on January 4th, at Nelson. D. Rough, Esq., chairman, presiding. A memorial was read from 30 ratepayers of Westport, requesting the Board, in accordance with section 2 of the Education Act Amendment Act, 1867, to allow aid to a separate school, established in the name of St Francis school, as is given to St Mary's school, Nelson. After a discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Broad, " That, in consequence of the uncertainty of the Board continuing to have control of education in the Province, it cannot grant any aid to St. Francis school beyond returning the rates."

On the motion of Mr Greenfield, the Board resolved, " That the consideration of the question of the amalgamation of the Fox Hill and Upper "Wakefield schools be adjourned for six months."

Respecting the abolition of Clifton school, it was resolved that the Board, while adhering to their decision -to have only a female teacher at £6O, agree to any arrangement as to teaching alternately in the two schools— Clifton and Motupipi—that the local committee may sanction ; some feeling was expressed in favor of teaching one-half of the day in one school and one-half in the other.

Mr Rose's application for £ls to fence the land at Spring Grove was refused.

The Committee, appointed to wait upon the Superintendent on the subject of the Provincial Scholarships at Nelson College, reported that his Honor promised that the £l6O voted by the Provincial Council for that purpose should be paid at once ; and that the question of briuging in a bill to make permanent provision for two scholarships annually, tenable for two years, should be considered by the Executive."

On the motion of Mr Jennings it was resolved, " That as the attendance at Clifton Terrace school has not exceeded 17 during the last two quarters, rule 41, according to which the salary is reduced to £4B in such cases, be adhered to."

II was resolved, on the motion of Mr Eout, " That in future no accounts or applications for money should be considered, unless they are received by the secretary two days before the monthly meeting of the Board." On the application from Mr Oharles Broad, it was resolved that the subsidy hitherto granted to one of the schools ,at Charleston, be continued to Mr A. Brown, provided the attendance and quality of the teaching warrant doing so.
