The Stewards of the Westport Jockey Club held <i meeting at the Post Office Hotel, on Thursday evening (Dr Thorpe in the chair), to receive the Treasuer's balance sheet and to past accounts for payment. The Secretary of the Sports Committee reported a balance of £1 5s Gd in hand, which was paid over to the Treasurer, together with a subserintion of .£1 from Mr George White, and £2 lis, the proceeds of programme cards. The Treasurer produced a statement of accounts, showing the total receipts to amount .£229. It was proposed, seconded, and carried, that the £2 deposited by Messrs Dobson and M'Kennna with their protest against "Why Not, as the winner of the Inangahua Handicap, be returned, it being held that the grounds for the protests were reasonable. Sundry accounts, amounting to £228 5s 6d, were passed for payment. Soma discussion ensued upon the account for bellringing, in consequence of the bellman's inattention, and it was finally decided to pay the account with a email deduction. Mr Simpson moTed a vote of thankn to the honorary secretary for his services, which was seconded by Mr Seaton, and carried. A vote of thanks was passed to the Chairman, and the meeting terminated. In consequence of not sufficient members of the Hospital Committee attending on Thursday evening, the meeting adjourned. Messrs Humphrey, Bailie, Whyte, and Munson were present, but five members were required to form a quorum.
A miner named Timothy Callan was arrested on Thursday, an information having been laid by his mate Donovan that he was unfit to be at large. During his stay in gaol, however, Callan exhibited such rapid improvement that on being brought before the Bench yesterday morning it was decided that he should be discharged from custody, the evidence showing that he had been suffering from a slight attack of delirium tremens. Mr Maguire, the gaoler, stated that the defendant, five years previously, had been in his charge under similar circumstances. Kobt. Mead was browght up to enter into his own recognizance of £25 to keep the peace, and to find a surety of £lO. The required surety was forthcoming in the person of Mr Walter Lavette.
The cost of conveying a man of unsound mind from Keefton the other day to Westport was .£2O 4s.
The Warden, after holding a Court at Inangahua Juuction and Reefton will proceed to Ahaura and Greymouth, returning to Westport about the 20th instant. Mr Broad will hold sittings of the Warden's Court in Westport during his absence. The first sitting will take place on Wednesday, the loth instant.
The amount collected from the ratepayers in Westport to the Education rate during the year ended December 31, 1871, was .£126 15s.
The s.s. Kennedy left Nelson for Westport on Thursday at 10 a.m., but has not yet put in an appearance. Her detention is due to strong southerly winds. Owing to the bad state of the Hokitika and Grey bars, the p.s. Charles Edward has also been detained.
The in-coming European mail was to leave London on November 16 and San Francisco on December 6, arriving in Auckland on January 1. Up to the present there is no news of its having reached New Zealand. It will bring eight or nine days' later intelligence.
On Friday the supply of penny duty stamps at the local Post Office was c wipletely exhausted. A supply of the- new twopenny issue is expected by the steamer Kennedy from Nelson.
